Flights to Sardinia

Airport Alghero-Fertilia (code: AHO) is only 8 km from the meeting venue. At the main travel times, we offer a shuttle service which you can book online (required). If unavailable, you can take a taxi to the Calabona Hotel meeting venue for approximately 20 Euro or take the number 9 bus to Alghero station. It runs every 30 minutes and costs about 1 Euro one way. The following airlines serve Alghero, but be aware that some do not fly every day:
  • AirOne (Alitalia affiliated) from Milano Malpensa (MXP).
  • Meridiana from Bari (BRI), Milano Linate (LIN), Verona (VRN).
  • Ryanair from Barcelona (BAR), Brussels Charleroi (CRL), Dublin (DUB), Düsseldorf Weeze (NRN), Frankfurt-Hahn (HHN), Gothenburg City (GSE), London-Stansted (STN), Madrid (MAD), Milano-Bergamo (BGY), Munich West (MUN), Oslo Torp (TRF), Paris-Beauvais (BVA), Rome-Ciampino (CIA), Stockholm-Skavsta (NYO), and others. Note that some of these are "secondary" airports which are often not served by international airlines.
Airport Olbia (OLB, Costa Smeralda) is 130 km from Alghero, which can be reached by train. Take bus number 2 or 10 from the airport (every 15 min) to "Via Gabriele D’Annunzio", which is in front of the large square with the train platforms. Take a train to Sassari (about 2 h, see timetable). From Sassari, the narrow gauge railway Ferrovie della Sardegna will take you to Alghero (35 min). The Winter timetable of FdS is not yet available, but is usually identical to the Summer timetable. From the Alghero station, a short taxi ride takes you to the Hotel Calabona. The entire trip will cost not more than 20 Euro one way.

Of course you can rent a car at Olbia airport and we will help you to team you up with others flying to Olbia.

If you spend an extra three days in Sardinia, you can make a nice round-trip Olbia-Alghero-Nuoro Province-Olbia which lets you see a fair bit of Sardinia.

The following airlines fly to Olbia:

  • easyJet from Berlin Schönefeld (SXF), Geneva (GVA, only Saturdays), London Gatwick (LGW, only Sat./Sun.), and Milano Malpensa (MXP).
  • Meridiana from Milano Linate (LIN), Rome Fumicino (FCO), and other Italian destinations.

Ferries to Sardinia

If you enjoy ferry rides, it makes for a great trip to come to Sardinia with the ferry, either using public transport throughout, or by car.

Grandi Navi Veloci sails from Genova to Porto Torres, where a bus meets the ferry and brings you into Alghero (about 30 min; get the bus ticket at the little ticket office before you board the bus). One ferry sail at night and one during the day (9-10 hours). A roundtrip costs around 100 Euro per person without a car, or from 200 Euro for two people with a small car (cabin extra).

Tirrenia di Navigazione also sails from Genova to Porto Torres and is generally a bit cheaper than Grandi Navi Veloci. Tirrenia only sails at night. The trip takes 9-10 hours and a roundtrip costs from 200 Euro for two persons with a small car. A cabin is an extra 150 Euro for both ways.

Corsica Ferries sail from Livorno or Civita Vecchia to Golfo Aranci (Olbia) on the northeast side of Sardinia. The trip takes 5-6 hours and a roundtrip costs from 120 Euro for two persons with a small car. To drive from Olbia to Alghero takes about two hours.

Moby Lines sail from Genova or Livorno to Golfo Aranci (Olbia), on the northeast side of Sardinia. The trip takes around 9 hours and a roundtrip costs from 100 Euro for two persons with a car. To drive from Olbia to Alghero takes about two hours.

Getting Around in Sardinia

Sardinia has excellent public transport with buses and railroads. Many different companies offer services. For detailed information on public transport in Sardinia, visit the site Get Around Sardinia

The major car rental companies and some local ones are at Alghero Airport and in town. You may get better rates at rent.it or auto europa. Short-term car rental on the spot can be expensive and can amount to 100 Euro for a day. For an extended stay, you may also consider traveling with the ferry and bringing the car with you.
